Breaking News: Codex Is Now Rolling out to ChatGPT Plus Users

Sherly updated on Jun 09, 2025 | Home > Chat PDF Tutorials with AI Solutions | min read

On June 3, 2025, OpenAI announced that Codex's availability to ChatGPT Plus users is underway. Previously, only ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team users could access it. What is Codex? What are the major improvements to this OpenAI's coding assistant? This post from EaseMate AI will answer all these questions for you. Let's dive into it!

What Is Codex?

Codex is OpenAI's coding assistant that runs many coding tasks in the cloud sandbox environment in parallel. Supported by codex-1, it is designed to generate code that closely mimics human style and PR preference. This cloud-based software engineering agent can be widely used to write, test, and debug code for developers.

This cloud-based coding agent is built into ChatGPT's interface, allowing you to assign coding tasks or pose questions in its sidebar while Codex operates autonomously in the background. This lets you concentrate on higher-priority tasks.

5 Main Features of Codex

What can Codex do? Here are 5 main features that demonstrate its capability in programming:

Main Features  Explanation
💻Automatic Code Generation Generate code based on your prompts and help developers automate various programming tasks.
✏️Multi-Task Handling Manage multiple coding tasks simultaneously to enhance work efficiency and productivity.
❎Error Detection and Debugging Identifies potential bugs in code and provides fixes to refine the outputs.
🔐Secure Execution Environment Run tasks in a secure, cloud-based sandbox environment without risking local data security.
🔧Development Environment Integration Access and interact with various platforms like GitHub and provide real-time coding assistance.

What Are Major Improvements in Codex

Several days ago, OpenAI rolled out Codex for ChatGPT Plus users and also updated some of its features to provide a more powerful, reliable, and versatile coding service. According to the latest Codex changelog, OpenAI has made the following improvements:

  • Expand the range of users: In the past, Codex was limited to Enterprise, Team, and Pro users, but now users can use ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month to create a programming environment and delegate tasks to AI.
  • Internet access: In the new version, Codex can access the Internet when performing tasks. This means that developers don't need to configure the environment manually anymore. Codex can do everything automatically for you, including installing basic dependencies, running code checks, performing tests, and more.
  • Voice dictation: Codex now supports voice dictation, enabling users to dictate tasks directly to the AI assistant. In other words, users can speak the task, so that Codex can receive instructions more naturally.
  • Update existing PRs: Developers can now update existing pull requests when following up on tasks, streamlining the workflow for managing code changes. This enhancement simplifies collaboration and ensures that updates can be made efficiently.

By now, Codex is not still available to ChatGPT Education members. We believe that OpenAI is striving to extend access to Codex for more users in the coming months.
